Traditional four-player Mahjong Competition Rules

How to play MCR Mahjong: rules and controls

Learn chows, pungs, kongs, and the eight-fan minimum before joining a table.

Build a winning hand

A standard hand contains four sets and a pair. A chow is three consecutive tiles in one suit; a pung is three identical tiles; a kong is four identical tiles and requires a replacement draw. Special shapes include Seven Pairs and Thirteen Orphans.

Claiming discards

You may chow the previous player's discard when the claim is offered. Pung and kong claims use matching tiles. Use the game's claim buttons for legal actions; winning claims have priority over other claims.

The MCR eight-fan minimum

A winning shape alone is not enough: compatible scoring patterns must total at least 8 fan, excluding flower points. Higher patterns can exclude lower ones, so do not simply add every matching label. MCR uses fan patterns, not Riichi han and fu.
